Bramhall’s health and wellness scene is thriving and right at its beating heart is everyone’s favourite local natural food and lifestyle hub, Amaranth. I Love Bramhall met up with owner Joanne Hill to find out more about how this ‘little’ health shop has earned itself a big reputation.
Tucked in on the approach to the precinct off Bramhall Lane South, Amaranth’s unassuming shopfront invites visitors inside with its appealingly modern design. Step indoors and this contemporary theme continues with glossy white shelves, chrome units and an eye-catching feature wall, along with abundant natural light.
If you’re planning to pop in for a single item or a quick browse, be prepared to have your head turned by all the good-for-you goodies that are just too enticing to pass. Stands displaying natural makeup, tasty (but healthy) snacks in wicker baskets, gentle hair colourants, supplements and even fashionable footwear bring temptation with every step.
You’d be forgiven for thinking that the shop’s diminutive external appearance would carry into the interior but, like Dr Who’s time-travelling Tardis, there’s an entire unchartered territory to be discovered inside. Not only does the shop floor stretch significantly further back than one might imagine, there’s also a little-known upstairs level dedicated to consultations and treatments.
Ascend the lofty staircase and you’re greeted by opulent red drapes at the threshold of four separate, beautiful rooms – one for consultations, the other three for treatments. These rooms are used by therapists offering a vast array of services including holistic facials, reiki and reflexology.
It’s this variety of stock and services that contribute to Amaranth’s popularity, along with up-to-the-minute knowledge of advances in natural healthcare, a professional approach to business management and a desire to cater to the community’s needs. Anyone and everyone is welcome to pop in for a chat – there’s almost always a nutritional expert on hand to offer advice.
Owner Jo took charge of the shop five years ago and the business has gone from strength to strength ever since, having scooped a number of awards in recent years. Former management consultant Jo made a career change into nutritional therapy more than a decade ago, and this combination of health expertise and business acumen has helped ensure that Amaranth thrives; currently, 14 professionals work from the shop, including nutritionists, masseuses and yogis.
Growing up in Hazel Grove, Jo moved down to London for work, returning to Stockport during her first pregnancy. She now lives locally in Bramhall with her family and relishes the community spirit, despite having never imagined she would end up somewhere where everyone knows everybody else. As well as establishing great relationships with customers – and in turn helping to build a more connected community – Jo says that the village businesses are super supportive, which makes Bramhall such a fantastic place to work.
Amaranth prides itself on offering a comprehensive range of health foods, supplements, organic makeup, footwear designed for health benefits and natural skin and hair care products. From Burt’s Bees to Dr Hauschka, FitFlop to Udo, there are literally dozens of healthy and natural brands all stocked under one roof.
The shop also hosts events, such as health talks and workshops, and provides free 20-minute nutritional consultations designed to help customers identify any dietary issues, learn more about potential solutions and discuss how nutrition contributes to energy levels and wellbeing. Full consultations are also offered, which include an entire written plan specially developed to each client’s personal needs.
Amaranth is open from 9.30am until 5.30pm every weekday and from 9.30am until 5.00pm on Saturdays – pop in, call the team for phone advice or book an appointment in advance.
