Gin is officially the nation’s favourite tipple, and when Bramhall’s very own gin bar 78 Degrees opened in the village just three months ago, it certainly caught an excited eye or two. I Love Bramhall met up with owner Chris to find out about the science of a great G&T.
Chris and business partner Ian decided to set up shop in the village after realising that they spend a lot of time locally, visiting the many restaurants Bramhall boasts! Situated right opposite Romulus Restaurant, 78 Degrees occupies the perfect spot for enticing in punters for a cheeky drink before or after a meal in one of Bramhall’s wonderful eateries.
With shelves stacked with a range of 90 gins – that’s right, 90 – there’s a bottle for every palate – including more than a dozen local gins. Offering a selection of 20 gins in total from across Cheshire, 78 Degrees proudly serves Forest Gin from Macclesfield Forest, 3 Pugs Gin from a garden distillery in Warrington and many more tasty tipples.
There’s gin of every flavour imaginable, too. The botanical tastes of elderflower, raspberry and blackberry make an appearance on the menu, or, for the more adventurous there’s Turkish delight, Earl Grey and even gunpowder!
Stylishly decorated and capable of accommodating 60 people, 78 Degrees is a gorgeous spot to rent out for a birthday party or work do – and what party is complete without a glass of glittery Unicorn Tears Gin or colour-changing gin?
Though there’s a huge array of gin to choose from, 78 Degrees serves up an experience rather than just a drink, so there’s no need to feel daunted. The friendly staff talk customers through the tastes and strengths of each bottle, and there’s an option to sample some of the choices before settling on one you fancy.
Other drinks are on offer too, so if you don’t feel like a gin and tonic there’s beer on tap, a wide range of spirits, soft drinks and mocktails – not forgetting their wide ranging wine menu, with prosecco and champagne available. If you’re feeling peckish, 78 Degrees has introduced a selection of tapas, including all our favourites – bowl of olives or plate of bruschetta anyone? If that doesn’t take your fancy you can snack on a packet (or three) of Cheshire-sourced crisps to tide you over until tea time – we won’t tell!
On top of the 62 gins on the menu the bar offers over 30 guest gins, too. The number of guest gins available grows depending on customer requests and once you find your all-time favourite, there’s even the option to rent a gin locker – your personal bottle under lock and key, served up with all the trimmings whenever you visit the bar.
Much like the chemistry-inspired name of the bar – 78 degrees Celsius is the boiling part of ethanol – the team of bartenders create the perfect gin and tonic with scientific precision. The undertones of the spirit are brought out with one of 12 tonics on offer and a fruity garnish sourced from the nearby greengrocers.
Despite being a new business, 78 Degrees is already playing a large role in Bramhall’s community. The bar has auctioned hampers at school fairs and sports clubs, also raising money for local charities. This attitude of giving back to the community extends to the environment, too – 78 Degrees is committed to sourcing fresh ingredients locally and uses only biodegradable straws.
The bar also shows its gratitude to those working for the NHS and emergency services by offering a 10% discount to Blue Light Card holders. Chris’ wife – who helps with the behind-the-scenes running of the bar – is a nurse, so the bar does its bit in helping these invaluable emergency services workers unwind every now and again.
Exciting things are on the menu for the coming months at 78 Degrees – check out their Facebook for the dates, the introduction of gift vouchers and platter cards, and later this year, maybe even 78 Degrees’ very own branded bottle of gin!
