What a year to embark upon a new business venture. For business partners Lianne Moore and Julie Bradley of Choice Home Tutoring Stockport, unknowingly setting up on the verge of a global pandemic in fact turned out to be fortunate.
Recently featured in The Times and listed in The Good Schools Guide, the company has got off to a flying start. I Love Bramhall caught up with the dynamic duo to find out more.
After a strong start in the tuition industry in February this year, directors Lianne and Julie had to re-think their face-to-face teaching model and quickly move it online using a virtual classroom. On request, their team of tutors even held lessons in students’ gardens and as coronavirus cases grew, so too did the demand for one-to-one tuition.
A warm, energetic and approachable duo, Lianne and Julie are experienced teachers and parents themselves. They recognise the importance of speaking with families personally before pairing a student with their ideal tutor, based on the child’s needs, learning style and personality. With access to hundreds of tutors across all the Choice Home Tutoring branches, the directors can reach out to a diverse range of carefully chosen specialists.
To ensure a high quality service, the pair put all prospective tutors through a rigorous selection process of interviewing and screening. Lianne and Julie are looking not only for experience and in-depth subject knowledge, but also an engaging personality and the ability to build rapport with students. Candidates must be educated to at least degree level and have enhanced DBS clearance.
Once tuition has begun, Julie and Lianne maintain regular contact with parents, giving them the opportunity to give feedback on how the sessions are going and discuss any adjustments that need to be made. This is a valuable part of the service and care that Choice Home Tutoring provides, and one that’s greatly appreciated by parents.
Another edge the business has over local competition is its premises: St Matthews Church House in Edgeley has two storeys of rooms for group sessions, workshops and more, and Choice Home Tutoring will certainly maximise use of this space as and when Covid-19 restrictions are lifted.
Both living in Cheshire, Lianne and Julie found Stockport to be the ideal location for their branch thanks to its proximity to them both and the town’s up-and-coming reputation. Of course, they also mentioned that they are particularly fond of Bramhall!
Lianne and Julie have a great dynamic between them – after all, they have worked together for 18 years! Their genuine desire to help families and witness children making progress is evident and this is what differentiates them from their competition.
Choice Home Tutoring is more than just a business to its directors. Motivated by the change they see in their students’ attitudes, and witnessing those little ‘lightbulb’ moments, the pair are clearly passionate educators and all-round lovely people. The fact that they have 48 years of teaching experience between them and both still work in schools means that they have a forward -thinking approach and up-to-date teaching style.
Bringing leadership and mentoring experience to the table and working closely with the other directors, Lianne and Julie are already establishing Choice Home Tutoring as among the best tuition companies in the area.
Thanks to the strong links they have forged with local schools, the next phase of development for Choice Home Tutoring could see its involvement in the National Tutoring Programme. Given the success they have already experienced during this difficult year, we see a bright future ahead for Choice Home Tutoring.
